A magnitude 7.4 earthquake was recorded today, 1 January 2024 at 07:10 UTC (16:10 local time) in Japan, on the Noto Peninsula (western side of Honsū Island). The earthquake occurred at an estimated depth of about 20km at the coordinates Lat. 37.33, Lon. 137.42.

The Japan Metereological Agency (external link) and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (external link) issued:

a) a Major tsunami warning for expected sea level changes of about 5 metres on the Ishikawa Prefecture coastline
b) a tsunami Warning level for expected sea level variations less than 3 metres in the prefectures adjacent the earthquake epicentre (Niigata, Sadogashima, Fukui) 
c) a tsunami Advisory level for expected sea level variations up to 1 metre high in western Japan prefectures

The alert also involved the Chinese, Korean and Russian coasts.

At 07:21 UTC, eleven minutes after the origin of the earthquake, the JMA reports that the sea level measured at the Wajimako tide gauge is 120 cm above average. The tide gauge in Toyama, at 07:23 UTC, measured an increase in sea level of 50 cm above the average.
