Tomorrow, 9 March 2021, the NEAMWave 21 exercise will be carried out. The goal is testing the communication system for tsunami warnings in the NEAM area (North-East Atlantic, Mediterranean and connected seas Tsunami Warning System), that includes the INGV Tsunami Alert Center (CAT-INGV) acting as a Tsunami Service Provider for many Euro-Mediterranean member States.

The exercise will actively involve most of the actors of the alerting process in Italy including, besides CAT-INGV, the national Civil Protection Department, ISPRA, the Regional Civil Protections and some municipalities in Calabria and Latium..

A strong earthquake in the Ionian Sea that will generate a tsunami will be simulated by CAT-INGV researchers.
The CAT will send alert messages to the Civil Protection Department and to the NEAM countries. The purpose of the exercise is to verify the communication flow up to the regional and local level. One of the goals of NEAMWave is to increase awareness for tsunami risk mitigation.

On March 9, during the NEAMWave21 exercise, some municipalities that are working to achieve UNESCO recognition as Tsunami Ready facing the Tyrrhenian Sea in the province of Latina (Latium), will carry out demonstration activities on the territory.
