On December 30, 2020, the municipality of Palmi (RC) signed to join the "Tsunami Ready" pilot program.
Following Minturno (LT), also Palmi aims to obtain the acknowledgement by the IOC-UNESCO, by achieving the 12 indicators (guidelines), to become the first municipality in Calabria "Tsunami Ready".

TsunamiReady is a voluntary local community recognition program aimed at promoting tsunami risk preparedness as an active collaboration between governmental emergency management organizations, local governments and citizens. The main objective of the program is to improve public safety before, during, and after tsunami emergencies

The Tyrrhenian and Ionian coasts of southern Italy - especially the Calabria and Sicily slopes - have a high tsunami hazard. Many observations of tsunamis in the recent past between the provinces of Cosenza in the north and Reggio Calabria in the south are reported by historical sources. The more recent tsunami that affected this coast was on December 28, 1908.

The graph below shows the number of tsunami observations in the Tyrrhenian provinces of Calabria from 365 B.C. to 1908. The Reggio Calabria province has the highest number of observations for the events of 1908 and 1783.
