Today, December 27, 2020 at 21:39:15 UTC (22:39 Italian time), an earthquake of magnitude Mwp 6.6 in the South Pacific Ocean occurred, offshore of Chile at coordinates Lat.: -39.2 N; Long: -75.02 E, with a superficial hypocenter at depth estimated between 10 and 20 km.
The South American region, in the Pacific side, is characterized by a very frequent seismicity and also very strong earthquakes.
In this area occurred the strongest earthquake ever recorded by instruments, with a magnitude of 9.5, which a large tsunami generated . After this event, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center was established.
