Today, October 16, 2020, in the framework of the Civil Protection National Week, the Tsunami Alert Center of INGV has participated in the tsunami exercise named MAREMOTO NORD, organized by the Latium Regional Agency of Civil Protection, the National Civil Protection Department (DPC) and the coastal municipalities of the Rome province.

The goal was the testing of the “SiAM” national alerting system, the activation and communication flux among the operational bodies in charge of the emergency management, as well as the intervention models of the different municipalities involved in the exercise.

At 9:07 of this morning (October 16, 2020) the Tsunami alert Center of INGV has issued the initial alert message after a (simulated) magnitude 7.0 earthquake located in southern Tyrrhenian Sea, west of Ustica island. The first message, based on seismic data only, has been transmitted in real time to DPC that has forwarded it to the local authorities.
After that, other two ongoing messages have been issued at 9:24 and 9:58 following sea level observations (simulated) at the tide gauges of the ISPRA national mareographic network.

The CAT closed the exercise at 11:30 with the last message of END ALERT.
The exercise has been a good test of the message delivery chain in case of a real tsunami alert.
