In the hot Friday 31 July 2020, the first meeting between the Tsunami Alert Centre of the INGV and the Municipality of Minturno in the province of Latina took place.
During the meeting, the CAT-INGV delegation presented the programme and the objectives of the Tsunami Ready project to the Mayor of Minturno (LT), the local Civil Protection officer and the risk manager appointed by the Municipality.
Minturno's coastline, bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea, stretches from the Gulf of Gaeta to the mouth of the Garigliano River, which marks the border between the region of Lazio and Campania.
The largest town of the municipality is Scauri, a coastal tourist destination that, in winter, has 7,259 inhabitants (ISTAT, 2011). Marina di Minturno, a summer tourist place, extends south of Scauri up to the mouth of the river Garigliano.
Although the stretch of coast is not one of the most exposed to tsunami risk in Italy, the Municipality and the local Civil Protection are sensitive to the issue and the safety of citizens and tourists.
The meeting has been very productive, delineating the first steps towards the recognition of Minturno as one of the first Tsunami Ready municipalities of Italy and of the NEAMTWS region.
