On the occasion of the World Tsunami Awareness Day (WTAD), celebrated every year on 5 November, the INGV Tsunami Alert Centre (CAT) joined the global #GetToHighGround campaign promoted by the UNDRR and the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).
In line with this year’s theme – “Be Tsunami Ready: Invest in Tsunami Preparedness” – CAT-INGV organised several awareness and educational activities aimed at strengthening tsunami preparedness and community resilience. These initiatives are part of the “Tsunami Ready” programme, coordinated by UNESCO–IOC, which promotes community resilience and supports the development of local early warning systems.
To celebrate WTAD 2025, CAT-INGV organised outreach and educational activities in schools in Minturno (Latina) and Palmi (Reggio Calabria), both involved in the Tsunami Ready programme.
On 3 November, CAT-INGV researchers met students and teachers at the “Angelo De Santis” Comprehensive Institute of Minturno for an interactive session on tsunami science, early warning systems, and safety behaviours.
On 5 November, the CAT organised a virtual meeting with students from the lower secondary schools of Palmi (Reggio Calabria), in collaboration with the Municipality of Palmi and within the framework of the EU CoastWAVE2 project. The event focused on promoting tsunami awareness and engaging students in educational activities on coastal risk preparedness.
Through its participation in the Tsunami Ready programme, CAT-INGV contributes to spreading a culture of prevention and enhancing early warning systems, which are essential tools for mitigating tsunami impacts and improving coastal community safety.
With these initiatives, the INGV Tsunami Alert Centre reaffirms its commitment to education, awareness, and the promotion of a culture of prevention, in line with the goals of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
