On 19 and 20 September 2026, the second workshop of the European NEAM-COMMITMENT project dedicated to reviewing evacuation routes in the event of a tsunami took place in Stromboli.
The initiative brought together authorities, representatives of the National Civil Protection Service, researchers, first responders and members of the local community, with the aim of sharing knowledge and experiences to improve emergency planning. Using a participatory approach, the group analysed preliminary maps, assembly points, evacuation routes and signage. The classroom session was followed by a site visit, which enabled participants to directly assess critical points and evaluate possible solutions.
The workshop thus brought together scientific knowledge and the direct experience of those who live on and know Stromboli, contributing to the process of updating the emergency plan and, more generally, to tsunami risk management on the island.
The activities were also accompanied by information and awareness-raising initiatives aimed at the local population and visitors. The “Io non rischio” information stand was set up at the harbour, whilst at the Stromboli Info Point, the INGV organised educational activities and the ‘Do you know Stromboli?’ quiz, designed to increase awareness of the risks, protective measures and the project’s objectives.
