 - The science we need for an ocean we want -

In Barcelona these days (10-12 April), the international conference convened by IOC-UNESCO to review the state of the art regarding the themes promoted in the Ocean Decade is taking place. The event represents a significant milestone for the initiative that will be concluded in 2030. During the conference, key issues will be addressed to strengthen strategies for sustainable ocean management, with a science-based approach that considers global and local dimensions, without leaving anyone out.

Climate change, food security, sustainable biodiversity management, sustainable ocean economy, pollution and natural hazards are some of the key points of the conference. In the debate, special attention was given to the Tsunami Ready programme involving Working Group 4 (WG4) for community awareness and preparedness and tsunami risk mitigation.

The Ocean Decade, in fact, aims at concrete actions to address the challenges posed by climate change, human actions and extreme natural events that can create human damage.

This year, Ocean Decade week falls between 8 and 12 April. On these days, there are many events promoted by institutions on a glocal basis to emphasise the importance of the actions in the initiative.

Today, 11 April 2024, Italy celebrates National Sea Day; an occasion to promote awareness about the importance of sustainable management of the seas and marine resources. Workshops and meetings with marine protection and conservation experts were held in some Italian coastal municipalities and schools.
