"A tsunami-aware population is able to protect itself", concludes Dr. Cecilia Valbonesi in the video interview published on the occasion of the third World Tsunami Awareness Day (WTAD 2020).

TsunamiReady is a voluntary local community recognition program aimed at promoting tsunami risk preparedness as an active collaboration between governmental emergency management organizations, local governments and citizens.

The program aims to improve public safety before, during and after tsunami emergencies.

The IOC/UNESCO, considering the program as one of its main objectives, has developed international guidelines, useful for the accreditation procedure of individual municipalities wishing to be declared "TsunamiReady".
INGV and Civil Protection Department, started the accreditation procedures on some coastal Pilot Municipalities, in order to obtain the recognition of "TsunamiReady Community" by UNESCO.

The municipality of Minturno ( composed by Minturno town, marina di Minturno and Scauri) in Latina province, is the first Italian municipality active in achieving the goal.

"Even if tsunamis cannot be avoided, becoming TsunamiReady can help communities to minimize losses".
