Researchers from the Tsunami Alert Centre (CAT) of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) recently concluded their visit to Valencia, at the headquarters of Mediterranea Senales Maritimos (MSM). The meeting was aimed at checking the progress of work on the construction of two deep-sea buoys for tsunami monitoring.
The initiative, funded under the MEET project of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and coordinated by INGV, aims to improve tsunami monitoring capabilities in the Mediterranean Sea. During the meeting, the researchers provided technical suggestions for the final stages and established that installation will take place between the end of August and the beginning of September 2025.
The two buoys will be placed in the Ionian Sea. Each will be connected via an acoustic modem to a pressure sensor on the seabed, at depths between 2,600 and 3,200 metres. The sensors, with real-time data transmission, are designed to detect any tsunamis.
This will be the first installation of its kind in the NEAMTWS (North East Atlantic, Mediterranean and connected seas Tsunami Warning System) area, one of four UNESCO intergovernmental coordination groups that make up the global tsunami monitoring system.
