Several studies have been published in recent years about the active tectonics and seismic potential of the central Mediterranean region. A focus on the oceanic subduction in the Mediterranean and on seismic sources associated with it has been published yesterday on INGVterremoti.com (by Tiberti, Maesano and Basili), following some recent papers on this topic (ref. below).
One of the most intriguing issues of this research is the possibility of large tsunamigenic earthquakes offshore, that has no historical evidence but cannot be ruled out based on geological and geodetic data in the Ionian Sea. The probabilistic tsunami hazard assessment (S-PTHA) by Basili et al. (2018) takes into account this potential tsunami source, although with a low probability of occurrence.
