An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 was located by the INGV's Tsunami Alert Centre (CAT) at 14:51 (Italian time) today, 2 May 2020. The epicentre is located in the sea, about 80 km south of the Crete island. Due to the high magnitude, a red level (Watch) tsunami alert has been triggered by CAT-INGV for the Crete island, while the alert level is orange (Advisory) for other regions of Greece, Turkey, Libya and Egypt. The alert message was issued by CAT-INGV eight minutes after the earthquake. Given the distance from our coasts, no alert has been issued for the Italian coasts, nor for the other Mediterranean countries. The figure shows the isochrone (lines of equal propagation time) of the potential tsunami and the "forecast points", the points where the arrival time of the first wave and the alert level are estimated (red, yellow and green triangles depending on the estimated alert level). At the moment (3:45 p.m.), the CAT-INGV has issued a message confirming the tsunami, which was observed at the mareographer of Ierapetra on the island of Crete, although with an amplitude so far limited (about 15 cm, or about 35 cm peak-to-peak).
